Chris Nicholson, Writer & Editor

Chris Nicholson is a writer and editor who will no longer, for the remainder of this website, refer to himself in the third person.

I am based in southern Connecticut and New York City, spending a little more time in the latter, but enough time in the former to keep my business based there. I love to write, and I love to help others write.

My history with words, in 200 of them or less:

I started as a kid, writing and publishing a family newspaper, long before the Internet would be a threat to such ventures. I graduated to high school, where I was first a writer and then co-editor for the literary magazine, then matriculated to college, where I eventually became the first two-year editor-in-chief of the university newspaper.

My first job after college was with Golf Digest, an excellent publication that let me do some research, proofreading and copywriting for them for 18 months despite that I previously knew little about golf. It was cetainly a nurturing environment. With my foot in that door, I reached my longtime goal of working as a writer and then editor for their sister publication, Tennis magazine.

After nine years, I jumped off that court and into the freelance arena, serving as an editor and writer for just about anyone who would help me pay my mortgage, working from home and from the seats of a coffee shop in downtown Milford, Connecticut. In addition to the magazine work I continue to do, I have added corporate clients and book publishers to my resume, and have written two books with some more on the way.

That tells you what I’ve done, but doesn’t reveal much about how I do it. I have worked hard for 20 years to hone the following two skills:

  • I write and edit with a strategy of “Show, Don’t Tell.”
  • I edit in the writer’s tone and style, not mine.

The remainder of this website details the work I do and how I do it. If you are interested in engaging me to create some prose or to help you hone your own, please look through these pages for more information or feel free to contact me immediately.
